1.8 "4N13" Engine [e.g. Mitsubishi ASX, Outlander, Lancer]

Mitsubishi’s 1.8-litre engine, known by its engine code 4N13, is a turbocharged diesel unit. It was first introduced in 2009 and has been used in a number of Mitsubishi models, including the ASX, Outlander and Lancer.

The 4N13 features an aluminium cylinder head with a cast-iron liner, along with double overhead camshafts (DOHC) and four valves per cylinder. The engine also uses a common-rail injection system, which delivers fuel at high pressure through a shared fuel rail. This system provides better fuel efficiency and lower emissions compared with older fuel injection setups.

The engine is fitted with a variable-geometry turbocharger, which adjusts the turbine vane angle to optimise boost across different engine speeds. This feature improves throttle response and fuel efficiency. The engine also includes a diesel particulate filter (DPF), which helps reduce emissions.

The 4N13 produces a maximum output of 150 horsepower (110 kW) at 4,000 rpm and peak torque of 300 Nm (221 lb-ft) at 2,000 rpm. It is paired with either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission, depending on the model.

The 4N13 engine has also been used in some Peugeot 4007 and Citroën C-Crosser SUV models. Overall, Mitsubishi’s 1.8-litre 4N13 diesel engine is a reliable and efficient unit that offers strong performance and good fuel economy.
