The 2.0 TDI engine (engine code: BMN) was developed by the Volkswagen Group in 2005. It’s a four-cylinder diesel engine designed for use in front-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive vehicles, with particular attention paid to efficiency and environmental friendliness in its design.
The BMN engine is built on the Volkswagen Group’s common modular diesel engine technology known as “Pumpe-Düse” (PD, or unit injector). It’s fitted with a high-pressure fuel system that uses two injection valves per cylinder. This system allows for a high fuel injection rate, which in turn improves fuel economy and cuts exhaust emissions.
The BMN engine also features turbocharging, boosting both power and torque. Peak torque is 320 Nm and peak power is 125 kW, with a rev range of 4,200–6,000 rpm. Power and torque delivery are tuned so the engine performs well right across the speed range.
The BMN was designed to meet strict environmental standards. It’s equipped with a particulate filter that reduces exhaust emissions, and its long service life means it requires relatively little maintenance.
The BMN engine has powered a range of Volkswagen Group vehicles, including the Volkswagen Golf GTD, Volkswagen Passat and Volkswagen Touran. It has also been used in models from other manufacturers, such as the Audi A3, Audi A4, Seat Leon and Škoda Octavia.
