1.6 FSI “BLF” engine (engine code: BLF) – technical specifications

The 1.6 FSI is a four-cylinder petrol engine built by the Volkswagen Group. Development began in 2002 and the engine entered production in 2004. It was designed specifically for compact passenger cars and has earned strong praise for its performance and fuel efficiency.

The engine uses direct fuel injection (FSI), where petrol is injected straight into the combustion chamber. This improves fuel economy and reduces emissions. Its crankcase is made of aluminium, which keeps the engine light and boosts performance.

The engine produces a maximum output of 115 hp and 155 Nm of torque. Top speed is around 190 km/h, with 0–100 km/h acceleration taking roughly 11 seconds. Average fuel consumption is about 6 litres per 100 km, with CO2 emissions of around 140 g/km.

One of the engine’s key technical features is variable camshaft timing, which improves both performance and fuel economy. The adjustable camshaft optimises airflow across the engine’s full range of speeds and loads.

The engine is compact in size and weighs approximately 125 kg. With regular maintenance and proper use, it offers excellent long-term durability.

Cars fitted with this engine are extremely popular throughout Europe and around the world. It has received widespread praise for its performance, economy and reliability, and has also proven easy to maintain, with spare parts readily available.

Engine code BLF has been used in a number of Volkswagen Group vehicles. Below is a list of some of the cars in which this engine has been fitted:
