The 1.0 TSI is a three-cylinder turbocharged engine developed by the Volkswagen Group, launched in 2015. It was designed to replace older four-cylinder engines in smaller cars, offering better performance and lower fuel consumption. The engine’s code name is CHZC, and it is used in several Volkswagen, SEAT and Škoda models.
The engine’s biggest advantage is its compact size and light weight. With a displacement of just 1.0 litre, it’s one of the smallest engines on the market, yet it still delivers plenty of power for city driving. It features direct injection and a turbocharger, allowing it to produce up to 115 horsepower and 200 Nm of torque. Efficiency is class-leading, with fuel consumption of only around 4-5 litres per 100 km - an excellent figure for an engine this size.
The CHZC engine performs excellently in city driving, but it also runs smoothly on the motorway. It runs quietly with minimal vibration, making for a more pleasant driving experience. Maintenance needs are low, thanks to long service intervals and affordable spare parts.
These cars are popular city cars, and thanks to the 1.0 TSI engine, they are very economical to run. The engine has proven reliable and durable, and has been a major success across the Volkswagen Group’s model range.

Which cars does this engine fit?
Engine code CHZ / CHZC was fitted to models including: Polo, Golf, Fabia, Rapid. The list is indicative — the same engine may also have been used in other models from the same manufacturer.
Always check your own engine code before ordering. The same displacement and the same model name can mean a different engine in a different model year, and only the code tells you for certain which engine the car has.
Where do I find the engine code?
The engine code is usually in one of three places:
- The registration document — under engine type or engine number.
- The engine itself — cast or stamped into the block, often at the gearbox end or under the cover.
- A workshop — a garage reads the code from your VIN in the manufacturer’s catalogue in a couple of minutes.
If you cannot find the code, send us the VIN and the registration number with your enquiry and we will look it up for you.
